Above is a photo of a set of hand embroidered pillowcases and the edging was done by hand, too. Click on the photo to see it better. (Is that edging called tatting or is it crochet with a very very thin yarn/ fiber?) I got these at a yard sale this past weekend. You know me....if I see handmade items and suspect they will be trashed if they aren't sold, I scoop them up as I KNOW somebody put a lot of work into them and I hate to think they aren't valued by someone. I got these for $1 each. They are now freshly laundered and I love them. (This photo was before I laundered them.)

My blog time will be scarce this week......
We will have the little cutie-pie, 5-year-old granddaughter with us this week. (We got her yesterday and she will be here until late on Saturday.) This means I will be doing the Grammy things.....pool......PlayDoh....coloring books...pool.....puzzles....pool......sewing cards.......pool......beach.....pool.....board games........pool......rides at the boardwalk.....pool....Webkinz.....pool. I think you get the picture! She looks SO forward to coming here for her "vacation" with us and we love having her. I will get some pictures to share. I am also going to pre-schedule some of my posts for this week, so if you comment and get no answer, please understand it means I probably haven't seen your comment as I'll be busy with little Jessi. (It also means I won't get to keep up with many blogs.......so don't think I deserted you...I'll be back!!!)

Pat, that is exactly why I don't go to yard sales. I would bring home way too much stuff that "needed a home".

Pillowcases that were prestamped for embroidery also came with holes punched along the edge. My aunts and great grandma would use cotton yarn to crochet those edges... The yarn being so thin it looks like string...
I am off to see my grandkids today for an overnight at their house. Love going there where I can leave the mess of toys...LOL

What charming embroidery on the pillow cases. What do you do with these items after you get them? Can you use them or are they too fragile for that?

wonderful pillowcases....I have no idea about the edging. Sorry.
I remember as a young girl trying to make stuff like that...my sisters were soo good at their stitches but mine were horrible....and to this day, I can't stitch worth beans. Have fun with your granddaughter....
I love those pillow cases. My grandmother taught me to tat and that edging looks very much like her hand-tatted pillow cases. Wish I had one now but Mother used them until they became rags in her ragbag. I have a bit of tatting that was left in my grandmother's sewing chest and I treasure it. I should put it on something.

Definately crochet, they made a chain row with a single crochet catching the pillowcase, then the next row they did tight single crochets across the each chain, then did another chain row, then did the tight sc across each chain again, beautiful work, both crochet and the embrodiery.
I thought it might be crochet - and Barbara sees it better than I do.
Those pillowcases are really pretty. I have been working on a pair - but, I bought them a few years ago - and the quality of the cotton isn't too great...and I hope I am not wasting my time making them up...

I love the pillow cases. I always feel the need to rescue hand made things too. The deer on these pillowcases are very, well, 'endeering'! I first thought that the edging was crochet, but I can't figure out how they managed to go from one 'arch' to the next while skipping one. So I think it must be tatting.
