A little of this and a little of THAT......

Tomorrow we will leave for a small trip to NJ....to visit a dear friend we've not seen in more than a year. We will be back on Thursday. There will be postings here each day, though. There will be a four-day giveaway in progress while I'm gone, so be on the lookout each morning for it, okay?

I am growing annoyed with Blogger as there are "issues" with photos recently and, at least temporarily, I cannot move them around within the posting. Sorry about that!

One of the photos here shows hubby and his little band playing last night by the bay near here. They do music from the 40's through the 80's...and are quite popular. However...last night there was a HUGE invasion of gnats so many of the listeners left early. A few of us stuck it out, though. (Oh...in case you were wondering, hubby is the guitar player.) The drummer is actually blind but he does an unbelievably good job!

The other photo is of one of my yard-sale finds from yesterday....a box of mostly WOODEN buttons. I love them. I don't know if I'll use them OR if I'll just find a nice jar and display them in my sewing room.

Purses for granddaughters.....

You may recall a short time ago,I won a pattern and fabric giveaway from Amanda and made the purse in the second picture below(with the fabrics she sent me which are also pictured next to the pattern). I have purchased fabric to make the same little purse for two of my granddaughters who have summer birthdays (and will put a gift card for a game inside for each of them). The one fabric has bumblebees on it...really cute, but I don't know if they would LIKE the purse to be mostly that fabric (might think it's too "kiddie" and one will be 11 and the other will be 9, so we know they are NOT kids any longer!!!) I'm having a hard time deciding which fabric to use for which part of the purse. Any ideas are welcomed! They don't see each other and don't see my blog, so they won't know if the purses are the same or different from each other. Look at the fabrics in the first picture (hopefully, it enlarges when you click on it) and let me know what you think, okay?

ANOTHER "2nd post" for me this week.....

Many of my readers also follow Linda B in Washington State. She has two blogs....one is Lost River Alpacas and the other is Fiber Fabrications (click HERE for that one). Many of you are aware that she was having some health issues that were suspected to be gallbladder. She last posted on Wednesday morning and then nothing (very unlike her not to post every day and also email a lot)...said she was awaiting the results of her ultrasound. I emailed her yesterday and got no answer (also unlike her). I got an email from her this afternoon and below is what she said....and I figured this is the best way to let all of you know. I know you all wish her well and if you want to comment to her, you can go to her blog (by clicking where indicated above) and email her through her profile there. She works very hard on that alpaca farm and with her crafts and I hope she recovers quickly and is much more comfortable soon than she has been lately.

Pat, Since we share the most followers, maybe you can put the word out. I'm too tired just yet. I had emergency surgery Wed night at 9:30. Then on Thursday, I had to have another procedure to remove a stone that was lodged in the duct. Tube down the nose, etc. I'm home now, but feeling pretty rough. I will update everyone soon. Linda

Details about the upcoming giveaway.....AND a free eBook

The week of June 1, I will be out of town for a few days. Here is what I am going to do during that time. Each day I will post a new prize and IF it interests you, comment on that day's post. I will let the giveaway run for a week or so and then draw a winner for each day's prize. Given the economy and my belief that we all need to be more "green", I think I am going to "recycle" some books (and maybe patterns) that I no longer need rather than let them sit here any longer. Some have been only gently-used and some haven't been used at all. I am trying to be honest with myself and purge my "collection" of things I will probably never have time to use, as I have seen a few other bloggers do recently (and that idea apppeals to me). They will be nice books (and maybe some patterns)......nothing wrong with them...just that I have too many books and patterns to deal with and too few years left in which to do all of them!!! So.....I am hoping these will be items that others like and will use. The only thing I will ask is....if it is NOT an item of interest to you, please don't post for it and let it go to someone who does truly want the item. Sounds fair, right?? Be on the lookout starting June 1....just wanted to give a little advance notice to you.
Now about the free eBook mentioned in the title of this post (and pictured above). This appears to be very interesting and was compiled by Kimberly Wulfert, PhD. and you can read it for free online. Click HERE to go to a post that will tell you about this and how you can get to read this book. It seems to be very interesting from what I have read so far and it is done in honor of Women's History month. I intend to read it all over the next few days.

Next "neighborhood" project.....

Our little neighborhood group (5 of us) met today and each worked on our own project. We will meet again in 2 weeks and I am trying to decide on a project. Prior to Christmas, I made this skinny wall-hanging (by PatchAbilities)...measures about 6 inches by 20 inches. I love it and they have a whole line of skinny patterns....and I have bought several of them.

The pictures below are the other PatchAbilities patterns I have and I will choose one of them for my next project when the neighborhood group meets. They go rather quickly and they really are charming. If I can get enough of a variety of tan fabrics to suit my taste, I think I will go for the sand castle one. Second choice would be the lighthouse....and third the flag. I'm not as crazy about the watermelon one or the birdhouse one. (BUT...notice I bought them all anyway. *sigh*) You can see on the pattern covers that this company has a lot of adorable hangers for these mini's, too.




Color is really "off" on the photo of the watermelon slices (complete with ANTS) below.

Another fun package in the mail.....

Now...before any of you start commenting about how lucky I am and teasing me that I win too many giveaways, let me set you straight on THIS one. It was NOT a giveaway. A really fun and talented blogging friend, Rachel (p.s. i quilt blog...click HERE to find her) had a bartering post one day recently. I sent her some fabrics she liked that I didn't need and she sent me these two books. She also was nice enough to include this adorable little doll quilt she made and named "Secret Butterfly Garden" because of the butterflies formed in the fabric. She told me it was a Mother's Day gift for me and included the sweetest note. She is a sweetheart and I love this package I got from her yesterday.

More scrap storage.........

Some of you may recall this basket (with a lid) I showed recently that contains LOTS of fabric strips......

Well....on Saturday when I went to yard sales with two gals, I found another basket with a lid that can now be a buddy to the basket above! This one is a tiny bit shorter and a different shape, but I like it a lot and I thought $4 was more than a fair price since it's in very good shape. I love when I find things like this at yard sales. (And as you might suspect...I will not have any trouble filling it with fabric scraps!!!)

A rare second post from me.....

Those of you who follow my blog know I very rarely do a second post, but....I have just discovered a new blog and the post that I will link you to there is one that touched my heart...and I feel compelled to have you read it, too. Let us never forget......

We all come from different backgrounds with various points of view....and we may not all agree on national policies (now and in years past), but I'm sure we all agree that we should never forget the bravery of our armed forces....those who served and made it home to their families....and those who made the ultimate sacrifice and never got to be with their families again. If you feel so inclined, please click here and take the time to read a touching story of how some veterans are memorialized each year at one of our National cemeteries in California. I also would like to thank my immediate family members who have served in the military.....my deceased father (Navy).....my deceased mother-in-law (also Navy).....my father-in-law (Army).....my husband (Air Force). Also, we now have a female relative in the Air Force who will soon deploy to Afghanistan. This day is about remembering and memorializing and even though the date now changes each year from what it originally was (so it can be a MONDAY holiday and give us a long weekend), we need to take a moment or two from our picnics and parties and think of the reason we have this day....because we can never forget.....it's too important and we owe it to those many men and women to remember!

I LOVE this magazine......

Yesterday I got my first copy of McCall's Quilting. I love it! I have to thank Molly (click here to go to her blog called Molly's Place). A short time ago, she had a giveaway and the prize was a one-year subscription to this magazine. That is a really neat prize, isn't it??? So...thanks, Molly. A relaxing day......and a good MAIL day...with pictures!

Okay....so you say you are wondering if I've gotten the house back to rights since Jessi has gone back home? The short answer is NO! I decided today was a relaxation day for ME. After a quick morning run to the supermarket and the feeding of my outdoor flowers, I went with 3 of my pals to one of the area bay beaches (not the same one that we visited with Jessi on Wednesday...but a beach on the same bay...Indian River Bay, to be exact). Anyway....we were there from about 10:30 until 3...intending to read and just relax. We did fine on the relaxation part and talked a lot....but got no reading done. (That's fine...lots of beach days left to do that this summer.) We each brought our lunch with us. This beach has some tall pine trees which are nice when you want to get out of the direct sun. I'll put a few photos here to show you. Also.....I got TWO packages in the mail when I got home from the beach......WOO-HOO......I was happy!!! One was from Betsy (click here for her blog). She made me the greatest kitchen towel (see photo below). I've been admiring the towels she has made for quite awhile now....and she decided to send me one of my own.....THANKS, Betsy!!! The second package was the apron I won at Rhonda's blog (click here for her blog...she does a monthly giveaway but only for her followers, so go be a follower there....even if it will cut down on MY chances of winning each month). There is a picture of the apron below. It is so well made...lined and everything....wonderful job, Rhonda. I'll have to get another picture when I am wearing it! Speaking of pictures, Blogger is driving me NUTS as it tries to rotate pictures quite often when I'm putting them in a post.......and they show up SIDEWAYS and I have to work and work (and sometimes make them smaller) in order to get them appear the right way.....anyone else have that happen to them???

I'm back...but am I awake????

Jessi went home yesterday, so I'm able to be back looking at my friends' blogs and answering comments made on my blog. BUT....am I awake? Not really....will need a couple of days to rest up and sharpen up my fuzzy mind. LOL I wish to thank all of you who made so many nice comments about the posts I did with the photos of our activities and "adventures" with little Jessi. We did have a lot of fun and I sent her home with a little photo album filled with photos so she can always remember what she did with us on this visit. We will have her one other week this summer for some swimming and more boardwalk (with rides this time).

I did manage to get a bit of hand-work done while she was here....my letter D block. I did that while I was watching the finals of both Dancing with the Stars and American Idol. You know I've shown blocks A, B, and C recently....so here is D with LOTS of "D" words........Dalmation (with a dotted dress) and Dolly (with a diamond design on her dress) dining on donuts with a vase of daisies on the tabletop. I've not traced block E yet, but I'll do that within the next day or two and will look forward to starting that one. The flash washed this block out, so it's lighter looking here than it appears in person, but you can get the idea. (Click to enlarge if you want to see more detail.)

A beach picnic....and more

Yesterday the weather was very nice....just right for a beach picnic and sand-castle-making as well as kite-flying and playing on the playground equipment. We've had a fun 5 days, but today little Jessi heads home. She didn't like the idea of going home and wanted to stay longer until I reminded her that she made little gifts for her family members.....and also has a little album of photos to show them from her trip...and then she felt better about it. Of course Grammy bought some of her favorite snacks to send home with her, too...and that helped a lot. Later today, Grammy and Grampy will be back home from handing Jessi off to Mommy....and Grammy and Grampy will " crash" and rest for a day or two! (Their old bones aren't as young as Jessi's and can't quite keep up with her very easily...but they sure have fun trying!) I will try to start catching up on all of your blogs over the next couple of days.....have hardly had a chance to read them at all with Jessi here.

Sea to SKY.........

Yesterday was a fun day...again too cool for this area for this time of year, but.....very sunny and warm enough to have a good day at the boardwalk in Ocean City, Maryland (which is a short ride for us since we live in the southernmost part of Delaware). The rides weren't open yet, so we just enjoyed walking around and Jessi went on some playground equipment..... played some Skeeball......had some soft-serve ice cream with chocolate sprinkles (YUM) and candy....had lunch (yes...in THAT order)....and added to her collection of Webkinz. On the way back home, we stopped to get her birthday gifts since we won't see her now until after her June 1 birthday. She got a new game (Build a Bear) for the Nintendo DS that her other grandmother gave her for Christmas and also a DVD ....some animated one just put out by Universal called Tale of Despereaux (looks like it will be cute). So...most of the day was spent by the sea BUT shortly before dusk, we had a real treat that involved the sky. Living not far from NASA's Wallop's Island launch facility, we were able to see right from our back porch the launch of a rocket bearing a military satellite. We saw it once it was a couple of miles into the air...and it was fascinating to watch the fiery rocket as it ascended toward outer space. It was incredible to see it streak up into the sky and to watch the second stage rocket fall off and see the rocket streak higher and higher. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get a photo but what a treat for Jessi to see this right from our yard! So...another good day of making memories....and one more to come today and then the little doll goes home to her mom and dad tomorrow.

Wild horses couldn't drag me away..........isn't that how the saying goes?

Yesterday the weather wasn't rainy.....so we went to Assateague Island National Seashore Park. This is part of the National Park System. It was chilly, though, so we didn't stay as long as we'd have liked, but we had a nice time. The park is beautiful with many trails and areas for fishing, crabbing, clamming AND camping (either on the bay side of the island or right on the oceanfront). The park rangers told us the horses would probably be on the bay side today (guess they are smart and avoid the wind and chillier temps by the ocean) AND....we found them on the bay side. Here are some pictures from our day that I thought you might enjoy seeing. Notice in this first photo there is a picnic table in the background. That is because there was a tent right behind the table....these horses were very near to several campsites. The one young horse was obviously very tired! Jessi was appalled at the amount of horse poop all over the place, but....with wild horses in the hundreds roaming the area, that can't be helped!!! (You will be happy to know we took NO poop photos!) You should be able to click on any of these to enlarge them, if you'd like.You will have to click on this next one, I think, to see the wild pony in the middle of the photo who just waded in the water to go stand by himself on a tiny little island in the bay. It is amazing to see them roaming so freely!For any of you who have ever experienced the joys of camping, you will appreciate the fact that at this park you can camp right on the oceanfront.....just leave your tent and walk a few steps over the dune and the ocean is right there. I can imagine in nice weather, this is heavenly. (There is an area for trailers and RV's, too......very nice place for camping!)Jessi looking out her side of the car at some more horses.Jessi and me near the ocean. You can see by our wild hair that it was too windy and chilly to be out there for very long. BUT...we got to see the wild ponies, and that was our goal....mission accomplished!
Jessi was hungry for a pizza lunch, so we drove to a Pizza Hut outside of Ocean City and had a nice lunch. We did let her buy a really soft "wild pony" at the park visitor center and she wanted us to take a picture of her with the pony at lunch. She named the pony Princess, in case you were wondering!

How to amuse a 4-year-old on a rainy day.....

How do you amuse a 4-year-old on a cool, rainy spring day?? You let her go outside in her nightgown....wearing a jacket and shoes, of course.And then you let her dust the living room and gather items to redecorate the table. Four year-olds have some unusual ideas of how to arrange things (click to enlarge)......but we can live with it that way for a few days!!! (She is so proud of her dusting and decorating skills!)
Oh, yes....and of course, you put her and her grandfather to work on the porch husking corn to be eaten for dinner. She takes this job very seriously, as you can see!
Hopefully, today, with the weather being greatly improved, we can take a drive to Assategaue Island National Seashore Park....which isn't far from us....and see some of the wild ponies there. (Photos tomorrow if we see any of them!)

RESCUED........

These two pieces were "rescues" at yard sales. It seems quite common to find quilted pieces at yard sales and I always feel badly that they are being sold so cheaply....as I can appreciate the amount of work that went into them. When I was going through my seasonal items to find my patriotic ones to take out for next weekend (Memorial Day.....EARLY this year), I recalled buying these two. The first one was just $1 and the second one was less than a dollar. There was no way I would leave them behind at that yard sale as I was fearful they'd just be dumped in the trash at the end of the day if they weren't purchased. They aren't complicated pieces and are not in the best shape any longer.... one is extremely faded, but.......I love them anyway. I would hope none of my quilted items ever find themselves in yard sales and can always find themselves owned by someone who appreciates the time I put into them. *sigh* By the time you read this, Day # 1 with little Jessi will have come and gone. I am pre-scheduling a couple of posts since I'll not have much computer time while she is here....but I will also try to post one or two with photos of her and details of our adventures over the next day or two. I know I will fall WAY behind on blogs...but I'll try to catch up next weekend. I hope all of you behave yourselves while I'm "out of the loop" these next few days!!! hahaha

Bits and pieces.....

Here is a post that is bits and pieces of various things.....a little of this and a little of Pat (like the blog title says).

First of all, today we are going to meet up with our daughter in northern Delaware to get our granddaughter for 5 days. Jessi is 4 (will be 5 on June 1). She has been counting down the days until her visit and helped clean her room yesterday AND do her laundry in preparation for her trip. It's nice when they are still young enough to look forward to seeing the grandparents, isn't it? She will come back once more during the summer when it's "swimming weather". We have a lot of fun when she is here and I know we burn extra calories, too, as we get VERY tired!!!
The picture above is of a cute pincushion I made for a gift. I had a pattern for it and made it from wool felt. I hope the recipient will like it...I might make more for a few other gifts, too. I finished it yesterday as I know I won't have much sewing time with Jessi here. (My sewing room is her bedroom when she visits and, also, I like to spend as much time as possible doing things with her since we don't see her that often.)

Last night I was a bit "bummed out". We had been invited to a garden party at the home of a friend. He had as a guest at his home Ted Keegan who was one of the leads in Phantom of the Opera on Broadway and he was going to sing at the garden party. I had really been looking forward to going to this as it's not often the chance presents itself to meet someone so talented in that kind of a small setting. BUT....my sore ribs were really quite bad by late in the day yesterday and there was no way I'd have been able to go stand around outside (in the damp air) for a couple of hours without being in some serious pain. So I had to cancel going at the last minute...tried to convince hubby to go alone and report back to me, but he didn't want to do that. I was sad about this. HOWEVER, I consoled myself by sitting for a short time on the screen porch on the glider and listening to the windchimes and the crickets and thinking about getting Jessi today and the fun I'll have with her here until Thursday.

I will try to post each day Jessi is here with pictures of her and tales of our activities, but I may not be able to read blogs as faithfully as I usually do or reply to comments here, but I know you all understand.....just don't want you worrying if you have no comments from me for a few days. Blogging friends are the BEST, aren't they? It seems like we really understand each other!

WONKY wisdom.....

Do you like WONKY blocks and quilts? Do you MAKE wonky blocks and quilts? I must admit, I didn't take to them right away...they had to grow on me. But now I appreciate the fun and FREEDOM that can be had by making wonky blocks and quilts. In fact, I am in a year-long wonky cottage block swap now that I posted about a few weeks back! Recently, a post on Quilting on a Budget had a lot of fun information on wonky blocks and a fun tutorial....as well as a listing of several bits of "wonky wisdom" that can be found at various places online. Click HERE to find that post and view the tutorial and the other links. There is some fun information to be found....and you might learn some new tricks! I did and can't wait to try some of them.

"C" my next block.....

About 2 months ago (gosh...can't believe it's that long already) I showed you my A & B stitchery blocks HERE. The pattern info is linked there, also. I have now finished block C and will start on D soon. Here is a photo of C......a cherry-topped cupcake on a chair (click to enlarge). I am going to sash these blocks in blues and greens since the stitching is done in those 2 colors. I know this will be an ongoing project of many months....but I enjoy showing you the blocks as they are completed and I hope you like seeing them.

Getting ready for the beach.....

Supposedly, it will be beach weather soon....although you'd never know it from the crazy weather we have had. Anyway.....these photos (click to enlarge) show two beach bags I made using fabric and pet screening. They are very good sized and hold everything I need for the beach...towel...sunscreen...a snack....a drink....a book...and more and even have pockets on the outside. I like the fact that the pet screening lets any sand fall out of the bag easily, unlike so many other beach bags. They were fun to make and I also made a smaller bag or two (no photos of them) that can hold just a book and a bottle of water and my keys if I am only going to sit outside for a short time. (Sometimes I do that since we live so close to a few beaches...and on days that aren't warm enough for swimming, I just go there and sit for maybe an hour and read.) The first bag was for me and the second one was a birthday gift for another beach-loving friend. So...you can see I am ready for the beach whenever the weather decides to BE beach weather....hopefully, it's SOON.

Flowerpot block winners.......

(Hope you read my THANK-YOU post just prior to this post.) Now......Ta-Da....drum roll please. In spite of a very emotional day yesterday, I managed to remember that some of you were waiting to see who would win the flowerpot blocks I showed you in THIS post. So...without further ado.....here are the winners.

Thank you seems so inadequate an expression today......

I hardly know where to begin. The words "thank you" seem hardly enough. I was hesitant yesterday to blog what I did.......but it turns out that it was a good thing and here is why. As you can see, I got MANY comments yesterday and I was overwhelmed by this. In fact, I got more comments than at any other time except maybe for when there has been a giveaway. (Speaking of that, there will be a second post today announcing the giveaway winners of the flowerpot blocks.) I cannot begin to tell you how grateful I am for the way in which so many of you reached out. My heart was touched and my eyes teared up several times in reading your words to me. I was even blessed with a comment from the husband of one of my blogging pals....and that was really a first for me in Blogland!!! There was also an anonymous comment (which I'm not usually fond of anonymous and prefer to know who is writing to me) but this person was very kind and I wish he or she would let me know who they are. One person.....a quilting as well as blogging friend who lives nearby...drove by and had her grandson hand me a long-stemmed rose and I had to bite my tongue to keep from crying.
Anyway....what you DON'T see on the comments from yesterday is that I also got many MANY private emails from others who didn't comment publicly on the blog but chose to talk to me via email instead. It seems that there are many who have heartaches and hurts and it seems that it was helpful for some of them to share their stories with me (and I was honored and touched to hear those stories related to me, as I could understand their pain...as they could mine). So.....if some good came from my blog post, then it was truly the right move to share what I did.

My family seems to think it's not a big deal that I get my cards 99% of the time LATE (birthday and Mother's Day). I believe this year they got the point that it hurts me a lot and they need to try harder with this "issue". I know, in the grand scheme of life, that this wasn't any major problem. There are mothers who have lost children and will spend Mother's Day in mourning or who were sitting yesterday at the bedside of a dying child. My hurt is very small in comparison to that, but...it is something that has bothered me for years and I guess even a small "things" when they happen over and over again will finally get to you and you can't take it any longer and you need to talk about it or you will explode. I had reached that point and shared it with you. One of my best blogging buddies said to me in an email yesterday that it's like "death by a thousand paper cuts" and she is SO right. It wasn't a major thing that was hurting me....but it was the constant recurrence of a small thing that added up to a big hurt.

I only began my blog this past November and at times I wondered if it was silly to have a blog. Well...yesterday I was very happy I have a blog as my wonderful blogging friends (all of YOU) were there to save the day for me. I I had no idea how many actually read my blog on a daily basis until all the comments and email started pouring in to me. I will be forever grateful for the way you rallied around me and I want you to know that I have tried to be there for each of you in the past and I promise to continue to do that in the future.

OH...on the lighter side.......you will get a kick out of this. To make a rather "blue" day even more unhappy, I managed yesterday to separate ribs on my right side once again. I have done this a few times...happens when I reach too far for something. This time I reached for AND lifted a 20-lb bag of potting soil out of the car trunk and POP...I heard it and felt the searing pain. Luckily, I was able to stagger a few feet and drop the bag of potting soil NOT on my feet (or it would have been worse). So...now I will need to keep my right arm as close to my side as possible for a few days and I know I will be awakened for a few days during the night with pain when I roll over in my sleep, but.....I've dealt with this before and....like Mother's Day, this, too, shall pass (in a week or two)!!! Thank you all for being such wonderful friends. You made yesterday bearable for me. Now...let me go write up the post for the winners of the flowerpot blocks.
