Name that machine..........
Okay....yesterday Rachel suggested to me that I name my Janome 5200 sewing machine (the one that was mentioned in yesterday's post). I have never been good at giving names to things I own. I have friends who name their cars....their sewing machines....their vacuums.......their crockpots.....you get the picture.....they name EVERYTHING. I'm not one of them...had enough trouble thinking of names for my kids, BUT......I was thinking maybe my sewing machine would be HAPPIER (and behave nicely???) if it had a name. I need help with this, though. So......I'd like for some of you to come up with some suggestions....but don't just say something like "Sally"......tell me WHY you're saying "Sally" (or Jill or Pretty Girl...or whatever name you think the machine should be called). I'm thinking this could be fun (or maybe FUNNY). So...help me....okay? I'll look at the ideas and decide on a name within the next few days. I'll put two photos below....one is of the sewing machine so you can look at her (him??) and be inspired to come up with a good name. Click to enlarge and see her (him???) a bit better. The other photo is of another block I made with the new machine for the SBS (Sylvia's Bridal Sampler) quilt top. This block is called Children's Delight.

Hummmm lets say Patrick...a spin off from your name and a touch of the Irish Charm for goodluck that it continues to sew and grow on you. Or Patty (still a man)...like St. Patty? Pitty Patty? Keep it Irish...maybe Lucky Charm...still in keeping with the Irish Charm...or just Lucky...or Charm to keep you warm??? So that being said.... A top of the moring to ya!!!

I liked Barb's idea of an Irish name. So I choose Cara which is Irish for "friend"
Hopefully the machine will be a friend to you. AND your friends helped with the exchange deal, so "friend" is appropriate.
Hmmmm, I'll have to think about this but it will be fun to see what others come up with LOL.

I don't name my machines either... but maybe it would help you talk to her while you were sewing and make her feel at home...
I like Janie-short for Janome. She will become your true friend...
Hmm...a name...I'll think about it as I am not real clever in the early a.m. You are really moving along on that sampler!
How about Happy?? as everytime you sit down to sew, it makes you feel happy.
This model has the same stitches, features as my Janome 4800, and it is a dream machine. Glad you got a replacement.
I don't name my machines either. When I sit down to sew at whatever machine I usually say "OK Baby we have sewing to do." Works for me, however, if they mess up I won't type what I call them. ;)
Whenever I have a problem naming something, I rely on my favorite cartoon characters. Last year, I had a quilt named Boris Badinov (you know, the short Soviet spy in Rocky and Bullwinkle)? If your new machine is speedy, you might want to name it Roadrunner. If you want it to behave nicely, how about Tweety Bird or Minnie Mouse? You get the idea.
My Pfaffs don't have names and I call my longarm "Gam" for short. I like the name HOPE for your Janome. You will be HOPE to accomplish many projects with her and HOPE she will run smoothly. Who can HOPE for anything more?
I don't name things either but since you asked I'm going to suggest "BIG BERTHA". I have a quilt I want to make and the designer named it Big Bertha. I have the fabric on order and the book open on my desk so once the fabric comes it will be in the works.

Well, I name everything!!! I think you ought to name her "Ethyl". The reason why is the story you told about the other one. I think she was "lucy". Lucy and Ethyl. Lucy is always tricky and planning schemes and Ethyl goes along with her but is more level headed. So that is how I see your 2 machines. Lucy (the one you returned) and Ethyl (the one that is stable and is going to be good to you. Can you tell I am a I love Lucy fan???
I didn't read the other comments so I don't know if this is already mentioned, but I would name this machine "Hope." I don't think I need to explain my reason. lol
First, thats a nice block. Second, I think you should name your machine 'potential brick'. Why? Because I imagine if anything goes wrong with this machine, you'll chuck it through someone window, be it your own, the dealers store window or the CEO's office window.
I have never named my machine. The only time I call it anything is when it acts up and then I don't think you would want those words on your blog. Maybe Emonaj would be a good name. Kind of like hanging a flag upside down in disrespect. I know you are not very pleased with Janome right now, but this might be going a bit too far.
My first thought was to name it "REFUND". But if you are going for the good luck charm - how about a little tongue in cheek respect and call it "Mr. Nice Stitches" or "Mrs. Sew-worthy".
What a cute idea! I am going to have to think about naming my machine as well. I think her name ought to be "Little Miss" because you will never miss owning such a fine machine!
mine is a brother, and I never call it a name unless I'm mad at it, and then it's "OH BROTHER"!!
Edith, because I'd sing all while I was sewing with that machine even if I sounded like Edith Bunker!!!

Frankly, I think it should be called Penelope for a female or Archie so that when it acts up you can blame the 'male' for the problem. Chuckle!

Well, I do have a bunch of names, (can I?), let's see: Speedy Gonzalez because you'd like to finish the stuff what are you sewing really fast, Rocking Mama (or Papa), because the machine looks like a monster, and I bet the machine does BRUMMMMMMMM when it's sewing, and thew other that come to my mind was Jagnome because sounds like gnome, and reminds me halloween and you'll remind the date when you got it from the dealer
So glad they replaced your machine but what a saga! Money back would have been ideal. Oh well. Hey....just had a thought "saga" might be a good name. I've only ever named my cars not my sewing machines, food for thought.
Call it Road Trip, for all the times we have been up to Milton for your machine and for mine. I think I will name mine too and call it Jamone-Baloney

Okay... I've given this some thought and here's what I came up with.
Since Janome is a Japanese company, how about a Japanese name? But not ANY name... since you're going to be spending a lot of time with this machine, wouldn't it be nice to have the company of a hard-working man? So, with that in mind, how about these boys' names...
Benjiro (means peaceful)
Chokichi (good fortune)
Ebisu (Japanese god of labour and luck)
Keitaro (blessed)
Toshiro (talented)
Yuki (luck)
All positive names so you can ensure many happy years of sewing with your new machine!
Well, don't name her Dorothy! My SIL lost a Grandmother named Dorothy, and he inherited a good bit of her furniture and stuff. After moving her things into the house strange things started to happen. Electrical items would turn on without human help -- things would turn off, also. It got funny after a while. Forever afterward, anything odd that happens is attributed to "Dorothy."
Our stereo will turn itself on, unaided. We look at it and say, Thank you, Dorothy. My Mom looks around and says, "Who's Dorothy?"
I don't want Dorothy to live at your house -- we need her here for comic relief!
Seriously, congratulations on your new machine. I hope it gives you years of faithful service!
