HERE to go see it. I'm entering a quilt that will be given as a Christmas gift to my daughter. She has had a rough year. After trying for 9 years to make a marriage work with a bi-polar husband (who then began self-medicating with alcohol), she decided it was time to make a break. This has been hard for her and her daughter (and also for us, as her parents)....but...things are looking up. We have always teased her when we go out to eat, because she almost always says, "I'll just have salad." SO...I had been collecting veggie fabrics and thought this was a good time to make her a quilt with them. It's a simple design...just squares on point.... that I first did in EQ7 (using colors where my different fabrics would go...orange for the carrots...light green for the lettuce, etc.). Like this....
Then......I made the quilt and I was very happy with the way the veggies "popped" with the black background fabric. (Bad camera work...the quilt really isn't out-of-square and the colors are nicer in person.) We have carrots, broccoli, red onions, various colored peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes and lots of lettuce!
I had a friend with a long-arm machine quilt it (a no-blog friend) and she did an outstanding job and actually changed thread colors several times so the threads on all the veggie squares would match the fabric....pretty nice of her, don't you agree? The last photo above shows her quilting. (Click on it to see it in greater detail.) I tried to get the photo positioned below this paragraph, but you know Blogger....acting temperamental again and not letting me move a picture!!! That picture was taken before I put the binding on the quilt. For the binding, I used the same green as the backing as it ended up looking the most "right" to me when I audition some other choices. I hope my daughter likes her quilt for snuggling under while watching TV this winter. Oh, yes.....the name of the quilt, of course, is: I'll Just Have Salad. Hi Pat, oh my goodness what a beautiful and creative quilt! I have never seen anything like it. The fabric is just wonderful! What a loving mother you are and what a treasured gift. I am so happy to hear that your daughter is feeling better, you were such a support. There are few things more precious in this world than knowing your mother is there loving and praying for you. I always like those fabrics but couldn't come up with a really good way to use them. Your quilt is great and very inspiring.

There's a reason another name for a quilt is "comforter". Hope she feels all the hugs sewn into her quilt. I have a collection that keeps growing of vegetables and fruits and other food items. One day they will be a quilt...
Great use of the veggie fabrics. I am sure your daughter will love this quilt. I have a fruit and veggie quilt in my waiting to be quilted pile but don't know when it will get it's turn.

Darling! Love your quilt and super fun idea. Good wishes to your family. I've had friends and family with bi-polar spouses and know it's a super stressful, almost impossible situation. My niece and her kiddos are still reeling from it. Thanks for sharing your really cool quilt and have a great day
Lovely quilt and perfect for your daughter. The name is perfect and the quilting is gorgeous. I have that same black fabric and it is great for use with fabrics that you want to "pop" in a quilt. It's just "beeeautiful"!!!

What a great, fun idea for a quilt. I'm sure your daughter will love it because it's from you, but it will make her smile, too, because of the inside joke about her eating salad.
That's a great quilt for a gift for your daughter and I'm sure it will cheer her immensely and help her remember in the rough days here and there, that she's loved and always has a "hug" ready.

I look at veggie fabrics a lot and haven't figured out what project to use them on, but I know I like them. This is a terrific gift for your daughter. She will need to wrap up in her momma's love and I am sure treasure this for years to come!
I;ve used this great fabric too, I called mine 5 a day. I sold that one but have enough fabric to make one for me one day too. I hope the future goes well for your daughter and granddaughter, they are lucky to have your support!
