This is a blurry photo (sorry about that), but...you can probably see it's a sewing machine and some accessories. They have come to stay at my house for awhile. To be precise, it is a Bernina Artista 200 sewing machine. A family in my church donated it to the church so it can be used to do things with the youth group, make costumes for Christmas pageants, etc. The pastor brought it to my house and asked me if I would study the machine and learn how to use it. However.....I am right now pretty miserable with hives.......which I got because it turns out I am allergic to Prednisone and was on it for a week to try to get rid of my poison ivy. I itch and burn pretty much non-stop around the clock....and none of the medicine I'm taking is giving me much relief. As you can imagine, right now the furthest thing from my mind is sitting down and learning how to use a machine that is totally foreign to me. I have never used a Bernina. I have used Singer, Husqvarna-Viking, and Janome...but never a Bernina. I know this isn't a new model, but it still has a lot of features and looks intimidating to me!!! (It appears to be able to do embroidery and I've never attempted machine embroidery, either.) So.......if any of you have a familiarity with this machine, I'd be interested in any comments or advice you could send my way. I'm not under any time deadline by which I need to know the machine, but I figured it would be helpful to see if any of you might be able to reassure me so I stop being scared of this machine! HELP!!!!!

I hope your scourge is over soon Pat. I'm not a Bernina gal either, but there are lots who are. They will help you.
I have used Brother, Viking and Janome. No Bernina. The people that I know who have them love them. I will see if I can find you info. Don't worry, if I can do machine embroidery, anyone can.
I can't believe you are allergic to prednisone. Talk about adding insult to injury. Hope you will better very soon.
Oh dear Pat. Hope you get to feeling better very soon. As for the Bernina... there are several sites that do tutorials and a couple of bloggers are into Barninas as well.

I have a Bernina 153. It's a pretty basic machine and doesn't embroider, but I love it. It sews really well, and is my favorite machine to blanket stitch on. You might try visiting a Bernina dealer when you feel better. They can answer any questions you have and give you some tips in person.
Oh that's not good to have a reaction to meds. on top of poison ivy:( Hope you get some relief soon!

Pat that just stinks! Poison ivy is bad enough but hives are terrible. I get hives from insect bites but for me Benadryl works wonders. I'm guessing you have tried a few different things to ease the swelling and itch? I've read that apple cider vinegar helps, and oatmeal baths are cooling and relaxing. I've also read that if you make a fine ground paste of oatmeal and cornstarch (3 to 1) and leave it on for about an hour it helps alot. Of course it has to be repeated every few hours but some relief is better than none. I've heard ice packs also offer some relief but it wouldn't be fun to have ice all over your body.

Sorry to hear about your allergic reaction! As if poison ivy wasn't bad enough! I have a Bernina 150. It is very straight forward to use and I basically love it, except right now that it is in the shop. Does it have a manual? Have Bernina send you one if you don't. I am sure you will be able to figure it out very quickly once you are feeling better.

That is a great machine, but I am thinking it will be a learning curve. You will enjoy the embroidery.
Yikes, poison ivy is bad enoygh then an allergic reaction to something that is supposed to help-not fair!!!!!!1
I've had Bernina's for many, many years and love them-never had this model, though. Currently have the 430 with the attachable stitch regulator for free motion quilting-love it! Have heard it compared to training wheels on a bike-oh well!!!!

Hi Pat! I wish I had some information about the sewing machine for you, but I have never used this model either. I'm so sorry to hear that you are still feeling so miserable. My goodness, you got hit with a double whammy. I hope you feel better soon.
Keep hanging in there, I know this thing will run it's course soon. Just think how wonderful it will be this fall when the weather is cool and refreshing again. Your hives and rash will be gone for good and you will be up and about and doing all the things you love once again. I will continue to keep you in my prayers and hope that you find some relief very soon!
Give yourself a little break, in trying to figure out the sewing machine if it is making you anxious, it is really hard to concentrate on something like this when you feel so bad.. It's a wonderful machine. I had the 180 which was vertually the same machine the 200 had a faster embroidery unit and thread cutter.
Google Bernina 200 Master Class Workbook...some of the dealers offer it as a free download. It should walk you through the basics.

Sorry to hear of your health issues. Not sure where you live, but in Utah you could call a Bernina Dealer and they would show you how to get started with the machine. It is a nice machine and really not that old. My suggestion is to call the dealer in your area see what they are willing to help you with and then wait till your feeling better to take them up on your offer. If you are in Utah....Nuttal's would be the place to call.
I have a Bernina, but not that model. I agree with the last two posters. You can probably go to a Bernina dealer, explain the situation of how you acquired the machine, and they should be able to help you with the basics. I hope you will be feeling better very soon.

I have not used a Bernina artista machine but you are one lucky lady to be able to play with this machine. I have only heard wonderful things about the things it can do.. Enjoy playing..

Wow, what an honor to get to "borrow" such a nice machine! I have never had a "fancy" machine, but I do enjoy stealing away my Mother's Pfaff every now and again. I sew on a very economical Simplicity Quilters Classic, but I'm saving up for a Bernina! ;)
Honey in the world of sewing machines you have just hit the mother load. Bernina sewing machines are fabulous. The stitches are beautiful and the machines are so dependable. I have had a Bernina for 20 years and never not once has that machine had an "issue". Bottom line they are user friendly and it is just a sewing machine they all thread and sew..BE NOT AFRAID..
Does this machine get to live at your house? Or is this a temporary stay?

I sold berninas and sewed and did embroidery a lot on the same machine...Just play with it and you will love it more and more....I am a bernina person thru and thru!
